Press Release Body = Barrie, ON - March 16, 2007 - Gorgeous weather and great ski conditions brought the Barrie community out in droves to Horseshoe Resort to help make the first annual Hit the slope for hope an enormous hit. Ski buffs hit the slopes and caught some air on Thursday, March 8th to raise the much needed funds for the Royal Victoria Hospital's (RVH) Simcoe-Muskoka Regional Cancer Care Centre (SMRCC) in an effort to provide accessible Cancer care and support in the region. Once in place, this endeavor will help ease the process for the region's Cancer care patients as well as alleviate the overflow in Toronto area hospitals.
Hit the slope for hope kicked off its events with a night ski followed by ski competitions and an après ski soiree. Attendees bid on items donated by Cravings Fine Food Market, Oscar's restaurant, MacLaren Art Centre and many more, and dined on a delicious buffet dinner from the chefs at the Horseshoe Resort. The Toronto media who attended Hit the slope for hope came to Barrie in style, treated to a special limo service courtesy of Sinton Bus Lines. Juno Award nominated band In-Flight Safety capped the night off, performing their melodious tunes to close the evening's festivities.
"This event was obviously a very personal undertaking for me as I recently lost my mother Gloria Calvert to lung cancer this past July, and lost my grandmother, Mary Calvert a month later to colon cancer," said Michelle Calvert, the creator of Hit the slope. "After watching them struggle and travel back and forth between Barrie and Toronto, I saw first hand the crucial need for having an accessible Cancer care centre. The RVH's SMRCC will be an astounding contribution to the community and Hit the slope for hope is just one way to help expedite the RVH's efforts and raise funds to help everyone affected by Cancer in the region."
Hit the slope for hope reached the goal of $10 thousand in donations for the RVH's SMRCC. Proceeds from this event go directly to Royal Victoria Hospital\'s Simcoe-Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre.

About Hit the Slope for Hope: Hit the slope is run by Michelle Calvert, owner of Lucid Communications - a public relations company located in Toronto. Calvert grew up in Barrie, and recently lost her mother Gloria Calvert to lung cancer this past July, and lost her Grandmother, Mary Calvert a month later to colon cancer. After watching her mother courageously battle the disease for over a year, she realized how important it is to have a cancer unit accessible. After spending months between RVH in Barrie for chemo, and Sunnybrook in Toronto for Radiation, Calvert realized the urgency for having a cancer care unit close-by, and is extremely connected with supporting RVH and their need to build the Cancer Centre. Calvert approached Carolyn Clark, a family friend who works with Horseshoe Resort, and asked if they would be interested in helping host this very important and necessary fundraiser. Within a week, the event was given the green-light, and here begins our story on how we Hit the slope for hope. Lucid - in collaboration with Horseshoe - plans to generate awareness and funds for the hospital by organizing a yearly high-profile event at the resort as a fundraising ski and après ski soirée.
